Around 10,000 troops have been deployed to restore order after violence spread across 20 of Mexico’s 32 states.

Mexican security forces kept up their battle with cartel gunmen following the killing that sparked a surge in violence and put the country on edge. Authorities said more than 70 people died in the attempt to capture Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes and the aftermath.

Head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known as CJNG, El Mencho oversaw operations of one of the most powerful and fastest growing criminal organisations in Mexico.

The Mexican army killed Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," in a military operation Sunday.
