Drug cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, commonly known as El Mencho, was killed in a military operation on Feb. 22.

Meanwhile, heavily armed Mexican security forces kept up their battle with cartel gunmen following the killing that sparked a surge in violence and put the country on edge. Cartel fighters continued to block roads as smoke rose on the outskirts of the town in the state of Jalisco.

Delta Air Lines is offering travelers who had plans to fly to parts of Mexico waivers after the recent violence and civil unrest following the killing of a cartel leader.
