After cartel violence shut down flights and blocked roads in Puerto Vallarta, Americans are canceling vacations and rethinking future travel plans.

Smoke filled the sky above the swanky beach town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, as shops and cars were set ablaze by cartel members after the government killed a major drug kingpin Sunday, leaving tourists and residents cowering in fear.

U.S. citizens are being urged to shelter in place amid unrest in Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations. Flights in and out of the airport are also being canceled, delayed or diverted Sunday.

Major airlines canceled flights and issued travel alerts on Monday for areas across Mexico following a surge of violence in the country after a powerful cartel leader was killed over the weekend. Following the unrest,
